Cavity Prevention Tips, Tricks, and Techniques

Posted .

Did you know that cavities are one of the most common oral health disorders in children? Not only can children get cavities, but cavities will remain a constant threat to our pearly whites for the remainder of our lives. Protecting your teeth begins with ensuring that cavities cannot be allowed to form.

Cavities are caused by a breakdown in the tooth enamel that protects our teeth. Tooth enamel is a thin layer on our teeth that can be eroded or destroyed by a variety of means including by harmful acids in our mouths. As plaque builds up, the bacteria within the plaque can convert harmful ingredients like sugars into acids capable of eating through tooth enamel. Preventing plaque is a key step in preventing cavities.

The best way to protect your mouth is to brush and floss every day. The ADA, also known as the American Dental Association, recommends brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once daily. Always use a clean toothbrush with soft bristles that can reach all areas of your mouth. Use a dental floss that is shred resistant and a piece long enough to clean between every tooth, with a new section being used for each space.
